Princess Kate Highlights Nature's Healing Power in Mental Health Charity Visit
The Princess of Wales shared her personal connection to nature as a therapeutic tool during a recent secret visit to a London-based mental health charity.
The Princess of Wales revealed that her connection to nature has served as a healing tool during challenging periods in her life. Her comments came during a recent secret visit to Dose of Nature, a mental health charity in Kew, London.
The charity focuses on improving wellbeing through clinical psychology and fostering a connection with the natural world. During her visit, Kate met with the charity's Clinical Lead, Dr. Georgina Gould, and other team members to learn about their approach to mental health support. She also toured the organization's Richmond-based site, Pensford Field, and observed an 'Art in Nature' session.
Kate spoke with Tom, a former participant of the program who now volunteers as a Nature Guide. He shared how spending time outdoors had positively impacted his self-confidence and resilience. Responding to his experience, Kate stated, "It's so wonderful to hear how your nature connection and how it's been so healing for you, and I felt the same." She further reflected on the sense of purpose, meaning, and belonging that such experiences can provide to the community, noting that this connection helps individuals feel capable of coping with life's uncertainties.
Dose of Nature, founded in 2018, collaborates with the NHS and GP referrals to assist individuals facing various mental health challenges. Their 'Nature Prescription' program offers one-to-one guidance from Nature Guides and nature immersions to provide long-term support. Last year, the charity facilitated 547 Nature Prescriptions across the boroughs of Richmond and Guildford.
This visit aligns with the Princess's ongoing advocacy for mental health causes. In October, she emphasized the importance of outdoor time for children, urging parents to encourage their children to engage with nature. "Nature is such an extraordinary environment for us all and, in this tech-driven, digital age, spending quality time outdoors has never been more important," she said in a video shared on social media.
Kate has previously spoken about how nature aided her recovery from cancer treatment. In a video released on her 44th birthday, she stated, "The natural world's capacity to inspire us, to nurture us and help us heal and grow is boundless and has been understood for generations." She added that connecting with nature allows for a deeper understanding of oneself, the surrounding world, and others.
Earlier this year, during a mindfulness walk in the Peak District with the charity Mind Over Mountains, which provides mental health support through outdoor experiences, Kate discussed her desire to be in nature. She noted the perspective gained from such excursions. The Princess has consistently highlighted the significance of the natural world in her life, particularly during her cancer journey and subsequent recovery.
