Princess Kate and Melinda French Gates Discuss Early Childhood Development Projects
The Princess of Wales met with Bill Gates' ex-wife in London to explore potential collaborations on initiatives supporting young people's growth.
The Princess of Wales held a working session with Melinda French Gates on October 8 in London to discuss potential collaborations on projects focused on the development of young people. This meeting followed an initial discussion between the two in June at Windsor Castle.
Their collaboration aims to align Kate's Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood with Pivotal, the philanthropic organization founded by French Gates in 2015. The discussions centered on how to better support young people and foster their ability to thrive throughout life, according to royal aide Christian Guy. They explored how The Princess's 'Shaping Us Framework,' developed with over 100 human development experts, could contribute to a holistic approach to development at every life stage.
"We are so grateful for the vision, ambition and commitment that both The Princess and Melinda bring to this work," Guy stated. "Over the coming months, partnering with Melinda and Pivotal, we will be exploring how The Royal Foundation might build on this in practical ways."
Recently, Kate launched a new project through the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, focusing on how nature can support the social and emotional development of babies and young children. In a video message accompanying the project, Kate emphasized the importance of spending time outdoors, particularly in an increasingly digital age. "Nature is such an extraordinary environment for us all and, in this tech-driven, digital age, spending quality time outdoors has never been more important," she said.
New polling commissioned by the Centre indicates that while 84 percent of parents agree that time in nature benefits their child's well-being and development, only 33 percent report their child spends time outdoors daily. Over 60 percent of parents desire more nature-based experiences for their children through childcare and education.
The Princess's work on early childhood development has included visits to forest kindergartens and explorations of nature-based learning environments. Her recent essay, "Creating the Conditions for Love to Flourish Through Nature & Creativity," further highlights her focus on the influence of relationships, environments, and experiences on healthy development.
