Princess Diana Feared Prince Harry Would 'Wither' in Prince William's Shadow, Expert Claims
Newly surfaced audio recordings from 1991 are shedding light on Princess Diana's concerns about her sons' futures.
Princess Diana expressed fears that her younger son, Prince Harry, might struggle to find his place within the royal family while living in the shadow of his elder brother, Prince William, who is destined to be king. These concerns are gaining renewed attention with the upcoming release of the three-part documentary "Diana Unheard," which features previously unheard audio from secret recordings Diana made with her friend Dr. James Colthurst in 1991.
The recordings, which were utilized in Andrew Morton's 1992 biography "Diana: Her True Story," reportedly capture the princess speaking candidly about her difficult marriage to then-Prince Charles, her sons, and aspects of royal life. Royal expert Christopher Andersen told Fox News Digital that the audio could reveal Diana's deep-seated worries about the divergent paths her sons would take.
"Diana worried from the beginning that Harry might wither in the shadow of his brother the future king," Andersen stated. He added that even at a young age, William seemed aware of these concerns and made efforts to protect his brother's feelings. Andersen recalled that in William's final conversation with Diana, just hours before her fatal car accident in Paris in August 1997, he expressed apprehension that a solo photo opportunity might make Harry feel overlooked.
Diana died at age 36. Hours before her death, she spoke with William, then 15, from her Paris hotel. According to Morton's biography, William told his mother he was to have a solo photocall for his third year at Eton College and worried it would make his younger brother, Harry, then 12, feel overshadowed.
Andersen suggested that Diana had confidence in William's ability to fulfill his future role as king but was apprehensive about how the "heir-and-spare" dynamic would impact Harry. He characterized Diana as seeing William as "wise, sensitive, an old soul" and mature beyond his years, confident he would handle the demands of kingship. In contrast, Diana viewed Harry, while charming, as potentially susceptible to insecurity and self-doubt due to constantly being in his brother's shadow.
However, royal expert Kinsey Schofield offered a different perspective, suggesting that Diana's primary concern was less about the brothers becoming estranged and more about the individual pressures each faced. Schofield stated that Diana understood William and Harry were on different life trajectories, with William born to be king and Harry positioned to support him. Diana, Schofield believes, emphasized the importance of their closeness, recognizing William would need someone he could trust.
Schofield elaborated that Diana was concerned about the weight of the Crown on William, acknowledging his destiny and the lack of freedom he would have to deviate from it. She reportedly advised him on the importance of finding a supportive partner and worried about his childhood reluctance towards his future responsibilities. Harry, on the other hand, had opportunities for independence and to pursue personal interests and charitable causes that his brother could not.
Both Andersen and Schofield agreed that Diana would likely have been devastated by the current estrangement between William and Harry. Andersen expressed that such a rift might not have occurred if Diana had still been alive, as things might not have escalated to their current state. Schofield added that their shared grief over Diana's death should have been a lifelong bond, and their current distance is a source of great sadness.
Reports of tension between the brothers surfaced around 2018, with Harry acknowledging in 2019 that they were on "different paths." This divide reportedly widened following Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to step down as working royals in January 2020, and subsequent events such as their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, their 2022 Netflix series, and Harry's 2023 memoir "Spare."
Royal expert Hilary Fordwich cautioned against interpreting Diana's past concerns through the lens of current events, noting that her 1991 recordings were made long before the brothers' current circumstances unfolded.
Andersen and Schofield also suggested that while Diana was a rule-breaker, her strong sense of duty might have led her to disapprove of Harry's abrupt departure from royal duties. Andersen posited that Diana believed Harry had a significant role to play within the monarchy, even if he was not destined to be king. Schofield added that while Diana understood feeling trapped, Harry had choices his mother did not, which he exercised.
Ultimately, both experts believe Diana's paramount wish for her sons was their happiness, closeness, and their development into compassionate men who understood their responsibilities. Schofield expressed hope that Diana's legacy serves as a reminder that it belongs to both her sons.
