Princess Beatrice's 38th birthday on August 8 is anticipated to be a subdued affair, according to royal author Andrew Lownie, amid intensified public scrutiny over her parents' connection to Jeffrey Epstein and speculation about her marriage.

Lownie noted that significant changes have impacted the York family since Beatrice's last birthday. Her father, Prince Andrew, faces potential charges related to sharing confidential information and has been largely absent from public life. Her mother, Sarah Ferguson, is reportedly abroad. Revelations from Epstein's papers and the publication of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir have intensified focus on the family's controversial past, raising questions about the princesses' finances and subsidized accommodation.

"Much has changed for the York family since Beatrice's last birthday," Lownie told the Daily Mail. "Her father remains under, in effect, house arrest in Norfolk with the possibility of being charged with sharing confidential information, her mother probably still in hiding abroad."

In contrast to past extravagant celebrations, including a lavish 18th birthday party costing an estimated £400,000 that Queen Elizabeth II funded, Beatrice is expected to scale back her festivities this year. The Victorian-themed 18th birthday, attended by guests like Harvey Weinstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Jeffrey Epstein, was a stark contrast to the more modest gathering anticipated for her upcoming birthday.

Speculation also surrounds Beatrice's marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. Lownie indicated that new details about Prince Andrew's friendship with Epstein have allegedly created distance between Beatrice and her husband in recent months. In March, Mapelli Mozzi traveled to Florida to promote his interior design business, Banda Property, rather than remain by Beatrice's side during the release of documents connected to Epstein.

Sources have suggested to the Daily Mail that the couple's relationship has been strained. "Things haven't been great for a while between them, but Beatrice has been determined to soldier on and forge a path through," one source reportedly stated. "She wants to stay together, but he seems more and more distracted by work and travel. Just when she needs him most, he's been pulling away."

Body language expert Judi James observed signs of discomfort and uncertainty between the couple even on their wedding day in July 2020. The wedding, a smaller ceremony due to COVID-19 restrictions with only 20 guests including the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, was overshadowed by the ongoing scandal surrounding Prince Andrew. Notably, Andrew was absent from the official wedding portraits.

"In body language terms it has always been Edo looking like the dashing, dapper royal prince while Beatrice looks like his gauche and more diffident wife," James commented. "In social confidence terms it often looked as though it was her feeding off him."

However, James also noted a shift, stating, "Edo’s signals of regal confidence increase while Beatrice’s have often suggested a wariness and desire to stay out of the spotlight." She added that Edo tends to gravitate toward high-ranking royals with confidence, while Beatrice has often appeared hesitant to be in the spotlight.

Lownie suggested that Beatrice's future within the Royal Family remains uncertain, potentially influenced by developments regarding her title, marriage, and business activities, which may be resolved by the time of her next birthday.
