Princess Astrid of Norway's Beloved Dog Dies Days After Her Passing

Princess Astrid of Norway's loyal rescue chihuahua, Wilma, has died days after the passing of her owner. The Norwegian royal household confirmed the news, stating that Wilma "fell asleep quietly, lying where she felt most comfortable: on a good lap."

Wilma, who was 12 years old, had been adopted by Princess Astrid from a rehoming center and became a constant companion. She frequently accompanied the princess, who used a wheelchair, to official engagements, including state visits, Christmas concerts, and royal exhibitions. A spokesperson for the Norwegian palace noted that Wilma was "particularly loved" and was often by Astrid's side during her public duties.

Princess Astrid herself had expressed the deep bond she shared with Wilma, telling broadcaster NRK, "Wilma means everything to me. It became a whole new world after she came home. I had lost my old dog, and there was a big void."

Wilma's death follows that of Princess Astrid, who passed away on September 11 at the age of 94. Her death occurred shortly after she attended the state funeral of her younger brother, King Harald V. The princess, who was the last surviving child of King Olav V, had made her last public appearance at Harald's funeral just two days before her own passing. Royal watchers had noted an empty space at Princess Astrid's funeral service, anticipating Wilma's presence.

Princess Astrid's love for animals was a lifelong characteristic, reportedly receiving her first dog on her second birthday. Wilma's previous owner had reportedly died of cancer before the chihuahua was adopted.

Princess Astrid became Norway's first lady at age 22 in 1954 after the death of her mother, Crown Princess Märtha, a title she held until her brother's marriage in 1968. Her final royal engagement, accompanied by Wilma, took place in May. The princess had been hospitalized for pneumonia in March.
