Prince William Calls for 'Holistic' Approach to Flooding

Prince William has urged a "holistic" approach to tackling flooding, observing that the problem is becoming more frequent and no longer aligns with traditional descriptions like "once in a 50-year events."

Speaking with residents of Skenfrith, Monmouthshire, who have experienced four floods in six years, the Prince of Wales listened as villagers shared their experiences. Rod and Helen Wyatt described how floodwaters had nearly reached gravestones in a nearby cemetery and had necessitated tiling their home's ground floor.

"It must be so demoralising for you now, the worry each year you've got to go through that again, potentially, is becoming more frequent," Prince William told the couple. He added, "They keep talking about a one in 50-year event, it doesn't make sense anymore. It might be in the researching and scientific point of view - it's happening every year now, it's mad."

He suggested a range of potential solutions aimed at managing water more effectively across entire catchment areas. These ideas include "slowing the water down" through farming and landscape modifications, planting more trees, and implementing better monitoring systems to anticipate worsening conditions. The goal, he explained, is to "deal with the whole problem" rather than isolated incidents.
