Prince William and his aunt, Princess Anne, joined royals from across Europe for the funeral of King Harald V of Norway at Oslo Cathedral on September 9, 2026. The Prince of Wales represented his father, King Charles, at the service. Princess Anne attended in a personal capacity as godmother to the new king.

King Harald V, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, died on August 28 at the age of 89. He had reigned for 35 years. His son, Haakon VIII, immediately ascended to the throne and pledged allegiance to Norway's constitution.

Mourners, including King Felipe of Spain and Princess Charlene of Monaco, gathered to pay their respects. Thousands lined the streets of Oslo to bid farewell to the late monarch.

Among the notable attendees were King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark, and King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden. The funeral procession saw Haakon VIII walk behind the coffin, accompanied by his children, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, and his sister, Princess Martha Louise.

Marius Borg Hoiby, the King's stepson, was also present. Hoiby is currently serving a four-year prison sentence under house arrest while appealing a conviction for two counts of rape. He had previously been temporarily released to carry King Harald's coffin, a decision that drew public criticism.

King Charles did not attend the funeral, adhering to a tradition that British monarchs do not typically attend the funerals of their European counterparts. Other dignitaries included King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, and King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. Norwegians had the opportunity to file past King Harald's coffin as it lay in state at the royal palace chapel, with wait times extending up to seven hours over the weekend.
