Prince William and Kate Surprise Ultramarathon Runner for MND Charity

Prince William and Kate made a surprise appearance to support Sir Kevin Sinfield during the latest stage of his "7 in 7: The Grand Finale" ultramarathon challenge. The Prince and Princess of Wales visited the DIY Kitchens Stadium in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, to welcome the former rugby league star onto the pitch.

The royal couple chatted with Sir Kevin, who is running an ultramarathon every day for seven days to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND) charities. They discussed the significant impact of his fundraising efforts for individuals living with MND and their families. The visit to Wakefield followed a trip to Headingley Rugby Stadium, where William and Kate had been learning about the rugby club's community initiatives.

Sir Kevin's challenge is inspired by his former Leeds Rhinos teammate Rob Burrow, who died in 2024 after living with MND for four-and-a-half years. Since his first annual challenge in 2020, Sir Kevin and his team have raised over £11 million for the MND community. This year's fundraising will benefit six charities: the MND Association, Leeds Hospitals Charity, My Name5 Doddie Foundation, Darby Rimmer Foundation, MND Scotland, and the Irish MND Association.

Each day's ultramarathon is structured into 7km (4.3-mile) blocks, which must be completed within an hour before starting the next. An "extra mile" event occurs daily, where Sir Kevin joins members of the MND community to complete four laps of a running track. The challenge route includes the home grounds of 12 English Betfred Super League clubs, concluding at Old Trafford ahead of the Super League Grand Final.

Sir Kevin began his challenge on Sunday from Hull KR's Craven Park. His route has passed through various locations, including the MKM Stadium (Hull FC), York's LNER Community Stadium, York Minster, and Bishopthorpe Palace. Today's leg brought him to West Yorkshire, passing near Burrow's hometown of Pontefract before finishing at Wakefield Trinity's stadium. The itinerary for the coming days includes runs to Headingley, Bradford Bulls' home at Bartercard Odsal, and Huddersfield's Accrington Stadium, with a cross-Pennine journey on Thursday. The penultimate day will involve runs through St Helens, Leigh, and Wigan, before concluding on Saturday at Old Trafford after visits to Warrington Wolves' Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Prince William and Kate have a history of supporting Sir Kevin's endeavors. In 2024, Prince William presented Sir Kevin and Rob Burrow with their CBEs at Headingley. He later opened the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease, meeting Burrow's family and Sir Kevin to learn about the facility's support for those with MND.

Princess Anne also met with Sir Kevin recently, joining supporters at the University of York's sport centre. During their conversation, Sir Kevin agreed that the term "fun run" could be a contradiction. Princess Anne, who is a patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association, expressed her preference for horses over running.
