Prince William and Kate Middleton Recall Fond Memories of Scottish Fish and Chip Shop
The Prince and Princess of Wales shared their fondness for a local takeaway during a recent red-carpet event.
Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, reminisced about their early days at St Andrews University, recalling their fondness for a local fish and chip shop in Anstruther, Fife.
During a recent red-carpet event in London, the couple spoke with BBC presenter Edith Bowman, sharing their enduring affection for the Anstruther Fish Bar. Bowman, who was interviewing attendees at a Royal Premier of Tom Cruise's film 'Digger,' described the conversation as a "pinch me" moment.
"Chatting to The Prince and Princess of Wales about Anstruther fish and chips a highlight!" Bowman later wrote, recounting the unexpected conversation.
This is not the first time the couple, both 44, have expressed nostalgia for the popular takeaway. In 2021, they made a special visit to Anstruther to enjoy a meal after a day of engagements. On that occasion, they ordered a haddock supper and ate it overlooking the village harbor. Their visit concluded with ice cream, with Prince William opting for his in a cup and the Princess of Wales preferring hers in a cone, before they departed for Edinburgh.
Thomas Innes, who was working as a fryer during the 2021 visit, recalled the excitement surrounding the royal couple's appearance. He noted that their visit brought a much-needed boost to the town, particularly in the post-COVID period. Innes described the couple as "down to earth" and without any airs of superiority.
Walker Murray, who took over the Anstruther Fish Bar in February 2022, stated that the couple's continued praise for the establishment is a significant source of pride for him, the staff, and the business. "It makes us feel really special that someone of their stature remembers the shop that fondly," Murray said.
The Anstruther Fish Bar has also hosted other notable celebrity patrons, including actors Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, and Tom Hanks. Murray also expressed appreciation for the support of fellow Fifer Edith Bowman, a regular customer when she is in the area.
"It works wonders for us when we get this kind of publicity," Murray added, emphasizing that despite the high-profile clientele, all customers receive the same level of service.
