Prince William and Kate Cancelled Jordanian Holiday Amid Fears of Iranian Missile Attack
The Prince and Princess of Wales opted to stay in Britain for their children's school holidays, reportedly due to escalating regional tensions.
The Prince and Princess of Wales reportedly cancelled their annual family holiday to Jordan this year due to concerns over escalating Middle East tensions, specifically the threat of missile attacks. Instead of their customary stay at King Abdullah II's seaside palace, the couple remained in Britain for Prince George's first school holiday from Eton.
A source indicated that while the Jordanian royal family issues a standing invitation, the current geopolitical climate, including potential threats from Houthi or Iranian missiles, made the trip too risky. The perceived danger has apparently altered the family's holiday plans, suggesting a deliberate avoidance of the region's security risks.
The Jordanian royal retreat, located on the Red Sea, is described as a lavish resort-like compound with numerous luxury villas, gyms, and watersports facilities. It is known for hosting prominent global figures, including members of the British royal family. Prince William and Princess Catherine have previously enjoyed extensive stays there, sometimes accompanied by their children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, as well as Catherine's parents, Michael and Carole Middleton. The informal atmosphere allows guests a degree of freedom, with activities ranging from scuba diving and waterskiing to enjoying barbecues hosted by King Abdullah II.
The British and Jordanian royal families share a long-standing close relationship. King Abdullah II was educated in Britain, and King Charles has been a frequent visitor to Jordan. Prince William is also friends with Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan, who trained at Sandhurst alongside him. Catherine herself has a personal connection to Jordan, having lived in Amman for nearly three years during her childhood when her father was posted there for work.
Previously, the Waleses' fondness for Jordan was evident in their 2021 Christmas card, which featured the family during a holiday in the country. They also attended the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein to Rajwa Al Saif in June 2023.
This year's decision to forgo the Jordanian holiday highlights the increasing concerns about the security situation in the wider Middle East. The source suggested that the growing threat of missiles and drones in the region made the popular holiday destination too hazardous for consideration. Kensington Palace declined to comment on the matter. The couple have previously opted for holidays on the Caribbean island of Mustique.
