Prince Harry's UK Return Offers Reconciliation Chance, But Royal Rift Persists
Experts suggest Prince Harry's visit could mend fences with Prince William, but his potential documentary about Princess Diana may create further division.
Prince Harry's presence in the U.K. presents a significant opportunity to reconcile with his estranged brother, Prince William, according to royal experts. However, concerns linger that Harry's reported plans to develop a documentary about their late mother, Princess Diana, could jeopardize any potential healing.
A source told People magazine that Harry's return to Britain offers the "best opportunity" to repair his fractured relationship with William, stating, "It would never happen with him in America. This gives them [an] opportunity to try and mend that bridge."
Despite this potential opening, royal commentators express skepticism. "I don't buy this," royal broadcaster Helena Chard told Fox News Digital. "Harry says [he and his family] relocated for so many different reasons, but the main reason is clear: it's the reported planning of the Diana documentary for the 30th anniversary."
Chard described the documentary project as "lobbing a grenade at Prince William's feet." She explained that William has consistently declined offers to participate in or create documentaries about Princess Diana, preferring to let his mother "rest in peace." The prospect of such a project, she added, could further strain relations, as William would likely want to avoid being pitted against his brother.
The rift between the brothers is said to have deepened since 2020, following Harry and Meghan's decision to step back from royal duties. Subsequent projects, including their 2021 Oprah Winfrey interview, their 2022 Netflix docuseries, and Harry's 2023 memoir "Spare," reportedly included personal revelations that further damaged their relationship.
While a source close to the family told People in July that Harry's relationship with King Charles is "better," the brothers currently have "no contact." A source also indicated that Prince William is "entirely focused on his family and the long-term survival of the monarchy."
Despite the challenges, some believe the King could play a role in bridging the gap between his sons. A source told People that Charles "welcomed the news of Harry's return" and that he "will want to see his sons together over time." Other family members, including Kate Middleton, are also suggested as potential facilitators of reconciliation, though experts note that she has reportedly remained equidistant from the brothers' dispute.
For William, a lack of trust appears to be a primary obstacle. British royal expert Hilary Fordwich commented that "Reconciliation will become harder, if not impossible, upon William's ascension to the throne" due to Harry's past actions.
Meanwhile, Harry has reportedly been exploring ways to "most meaningfully" honor his mother's legacy ahead of the 30th anniversary of her death in August 2027. While several documentary ideas are under discussion, no project has been finalized or confirmed. The upcoming 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham, England, also presents a potential future occasion for the brothers' interactions.
In a May 2025 interview, Harry stated his desire for reconciliation, saying, "There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore."
