A representative for Prince Harry has stated that comments made by the Duke of Sussex in a recent GQ interview regarding family reconciliation were not intended as a criticism of his brother, Prince William, or any other family member.
In the interview with GQ writer Zach Baron, conducted in support of Harry's MasterClass on grief, the Duke of Sussex discussed complex family dynamics, including his relationships with his father, King Charles, and his brother. When asked if his strained relationships were something he grieved, Harry responded, "Yes, of course. I think from a family perspective, again: another massively relatable issue for so many people."
He elaborated on sibling disagreements and broken relationships between parents and children, noting how these issues continue to arise in conversations he has with people. Harry suggested that if people see how he works through his own challenges, it might help them. "And some people don’t want it to work out. I want it to work out," he said. "With everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point."
A spokesperson for Prince Harry told HuffPost that this particular comment "was absolutely not intended as a swipe at his brother or any other member of his family." The representative further clarified that the remark "was made in a general context and was not directed at his family in any way."
Harry has previously spoken about his desire for reconciliation with his family. In an interview with the BBC last year, he stated, "I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight any more, life is precious."
While relations between Prince Harry and King Charles have reportedly warmed in recent months, the relationship between Harry and Prince William has remained strained. Factors contributing to this estrangement include the publication of Harry's memoir, "Spare," and various interviews given by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex discussing their experiences with the royal family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from their roles as working members of the royal family in 2020 and relocated to North America. Recently, they moved back to the United Kingdom. Harry mentioned in the GQ interview that this relocation offered new opportunities for his family, including the chance to enroll their children in a British school, something he found to be significantly important to him. He also expressed satisfaction in being back on UK soil for extended periods, stating, "It’s nice to be back."
