Prince Harry's hope for reconciliation with his father, King Charles III, faces a significant hurdle despite the upcoming departure of the monarch's longtime principal private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton. Alderton is scheduled to step down from his role in May 2027.
Royal insider Kinsey Schofield suggested that while Harry might personally welcome Alderton's retirement, particularly given negative portrayals in his memoir "Spare," the belief that this single change will clear the path for a return to the Royal Family is likely misguided. Schofield stated that the "trust deficit" between Harry and his father is far more profound than the influence of any single advisor.
Schofield argued that attributing the potential for reconciliation to the departure of a courtier overestimates the staff's power and underestimates Prince Harry's own role in the estrangement. She emphasized that genuine reconciliation hinges on Harry convincing his family that private matters will remain confidential and that "history won't repeat itself."
"The issues that fractured the relationship, trust, confidentiality, and Harry’s repeated public criticism of the institution, don't disappear because one courtier is retiring," Schofield told Page Six. She added that Palace policy is not dictated by one individual, and Alderton, while a trusted advisor, does not solely influence decisions regarding the King's relationship with his son.
According to Schofield, rebuilding credibility is paramount and is solely within Harry's capacity, requiring time, consistency, and discretion. She noted that King Charles receives advice from multiple sources and that the authority to repair the relationship has always rested with the King himself.
The strained relationship between Prince Harry and King Charles dates back to 2020, when Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal duties and relocated to California. Since then, private royal matters have been aired publicly through various interviews and Harry's memoir.
However, steps toward mending the relationship began in 2024 after King Charles revealed his cancer diagnosis. Harry and Markle reunited with Charles and Queen Camilla in the UK earlier this month for the first time in four years. The couple's children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were also present. Although the reunion was described as "wasn't entirely warm and fuzzy," Harry is expected to return to the UK in September and may be offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace.
Despite these developments, the rift between Harry and his brother, Prince William, appears to persist, with both maintaining distance from each other.
Prince Harry's memoir "Spare" reportedly referred to Alderton as "The Wasp," describing him as "link, charming, arrogant, a ball of jazzy energy." Harry wrote that Alderton was adept at appearing polite while subtly undermining others, stating, "A short time later, without warning, he’d give you such a stab with his outsized stinger that you’d cry in confusion. ‘Where the f— did that come from?'"
