Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly frustrated with King Charles III's recent letter that clarified their status as private citizens with commercial and charitable interests, according to reports.
The couple, who returned to the United Kingdom on August 26 after stepping down from their royal duties six years ago, object to being described as "private citizens." Sources close to the Sussexes indicate they would prefer to be identified as "public figures."
Additionally, Harry and Meghan reportedly desired an acknowledgement that they remain members of the royal family on a personal level, despite no longer receiving public funding. King Charles' letter, released on a Monday, was allegedly shared with the media without prior consultation with the couple.
Royal insiders told The Telegraph that the monarch and his staff intended to inform the Duke and Duchess of Sussex before the letter's public release and aimed to "clarify one or two points." The note was reportedly sent to the Sussexes' office at 1:59 p.m. UK time. The couple's staff responded 20 minutes later, inquiring if the letter had already been distributed. Aides then attempted to reach Harry, who was in a meeting, at 3:09 p.m. to seek guidance on its distribution. However, the letter had already been shared with the media three minutes earlier, at 3:06 p.m., unbeknownst to Harry and his team.
Sources connected to Harry and Markle have suggested that the timing of the letter's release was "deliberate" and intended to influence the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures. This committee was reportedly preparing to discuss whether Harry, Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, should be granted police protection.
However, palace sources have strongly rejected this claim, asserting that the letter was merely clarifying the "continued position for the benefit of all parties."
The family of four arrived in the UK on August 26 for what was described as an "extended period." Since their arrival, reports indicate their children have been enrolled in a prep school and the couple has been house hunting in the Cotswolds, near King Charles' residence. Meghan Markle has also been seen attending social events, such as having tea at a members-only retreat.
