Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are undertaking their first joint public appearances in Britain since they stepped away from royal duties six years ago. The couple is visiting three charities in Nottingham, a city in central England where they made their first joint appearance after announcing their engagement in 2017.
These events are being presented with formal elements, including the use of Harry and Meghan's titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and a prearranged media pool to document their activities. Their philanthropic venture, Archewell, which was prominent during their time in the U.S., is not the central focus.
However, King Charles III has emphasized that the couple remain non-working members of the royal family. This status was confirmed in a letter sent on behalf of the King to senior government officials shortly after Harry and Meghan returned to the UK in September. The palace stressed that the couple would continue to refrain from using their royal styles—His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness—and any charitable work would be undertaken as private citizens. This directive underscored concerns among some palace officials that Harry and Meghan's celebrity could potentially create a parallel royal presence, competing with working royals for media attention.
Revisiting Familiar Partners
Thursday's itinerary includes visits to the Community Recording Studio, which supports young people through music and performance; Himmah, a large food bank; and Epic Partners, an organization offering sports and education programs for disadvantaged youth. Harry has long-standing involvement with the Community Recording Studio and Epic Partners, while Meghan collaborated with Himmah for "Together: Our Community Cookbook" in 2018.
While the couple continued to support UK charities after leaving Britain, their primary focus shifted. Harry and Meghan relinquished their royal duties and relocated to California more than six years ago, seeking financial independence and signing significant contracts with Netflix and Spotify. Their departure led to strained relations with the royal family, particularly after they publicly stated that palace staff had been insensitive to Meghan’s mental health and made accusations of racism and media manipulation.
Seeking Reconciliation
Recent months have seen a thaw in tensions, with Harry expressing a desire for reconciliation with his father, King Charles III. Harry has voiced his wish for his children to know their grandfather, who is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer discovered in 2024. The couple and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are reportedly residing in a private home in the Cotswolds.
Despite their expressed happiness about returning to the UK, the move has encountered challenges. Harry is actively seeking publicly funded police protection, which was rescinded when he and Meghan stepped down as working royals. The prince asserts that he and his family remain under threat due to his royal status, a concern highlighted by the recent change of schools for their children due to security issues.
