Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Denounce "Reckless" Paparazzi Incident Near Children's School
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex described the actions of photographers near their children's UK school as an "unacceptable intrusion" and "irresponsible."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have strongly condemned what they described as an "extraordinarily reckless" paparazzi intrusion near the United Kingdom school attended by their children. The couple's spokesperson stated that the actions constituted an "unacceptable intrusion into the privacy of children."
Two individuals, identified as international photographers for a European press agency, were observed by private security and school staff examining the perimeter of the school. They were seen looking into the school grounds and monitoring children, before returning to a white rental van. The incident is particularly sensitive as the school is attended by American children whose families are connected to a nearby U.S. military installation at an RAF base.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex highlighted the recklessness of the photographers' conduct, especially given the proximity to a school. "There is a world of difference between legitimate media activity and photographers walking the perimeter of a school, stopping to look into the grounds and monitoring children as they go about their day," the spokesperson said.
The incident occurred approximately 48 hours after a separate event near RAF Fairford, where police responded to reports of three suspicious vehicles. Five men were arrested in connection with that incident on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and preparing a terrorist act under the Terrorism Act.
The spokesperson for the Sussexes expressed concern over the "extraordinary lack of judgment" demonstrated by the photographers, noting the timing and circumstances. "Whatever photographs they may have been seeking, this was not only an unacceptable intrusion into the privacy of all children; it was an irresponsible and ill-considered way to conduct themselves in the vicinity of a school," the statement read.
Harry and Meghan, who stepped down as senior working royals in 2020, recently returned to the UK for an extended stay after six years in California. Their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, recently began attending school in England. Reports indicate the children switched schools shortly after the term began due to security and logistical concerns.
The couple's return to Britain does not signify a resumption of royal duties. They have maintained their independent lives since their departure from senior royal roles.
