Prime Video’s ‘Love in Disguise’ Blends Romance, Comedy, and Murder Mystery
The new K-drama follows a detective who goes undercover as a male secretary to investigate a murder case.
Prime Video has added the new Korean drama "Love in Disguise" to its streaming library. The series, based on the web novel Why You Don’t Know It’s a Girl? by Lee A-yeon and Ryu Do-ha, centers on a detective who assumes a male identity to get close to a murder suspect.
The narrative kicks off on a stormy night in Seoul, where Yoon Yi-jun (Yim Si-wan), the ambitious Managing Director of Taekang Group, is discovered with a deceased secretary, Han Eun-young, at the scene of her murder. With his DNA present, Yi-jun becomes the prime suspect. Despite his efforts, aided by his lawyer friend Kim Si-hyun (Kim Jung-hyun), to have the charges dismissed, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Mobile Criminal Investigation Unit remains unconvinced.
Facing pressure from their superintendent to drop the high-profile case, the team, led by Team Leader Park Bong-i (Kim In-kwon), Sergeant Jeong Wan-gu (Kim Ki-bang), Inspector Kim Seok-jin (Nam Hae-jun), and Detective Kang Jae-hee (Seol In-ah), is determined to uncover the truth. When they learn the victim had a secret second phone that might contain crucial evidence, the tomboyish Jae-hee volunteers for an undercover operation.
Leveraging her masculine demeanor, martial arts skills, and past experience in the Korean Army’s Special Forces, Jae-hee takes on the role of a male secretary to Yoon Yi-jun. She believes her appearance and personality will allow her to blend in and extract information. However, the observant Yi-jun quickly becomes suspicious, setting the stage for a complex investigation filled with potential betrayals, developing feelings, and personal challenges.
"Love in Disguise" has been compared to other K-dramas featuring cross-dressing protagonists and elements of action and thriller, such as Coffee Prince, Love in the Moonlight, Healer, and The K2.
The series aims to balance humor, compelling characters, and a central whodunnit plot. The performances, particularly from lead actors Seol In-ah as the spirited detective and Yim Si-wan as the seemingly cold executive, are highlighted. The show also plays with K-drama tropes, adding a layer of meta-commentary.
The first episode, now available for streaming, sets up an intriguing premise with the first 11 episodes to be released weekly on Prime Video. The series is described as a fast-paced and entertaining watch for fans of Korean dramas.
