Primary School Headteacher Suffers Suspected Heart Attack During Ofsted Inspection
Stunned pupils witnessed their headteacher being taken to the hospital by ambulance.
The headteacher of Chapelhill Primary School in Wirral suffered a suspected heart attack during an Ofsted inspection on Wednesday morning. Sarah McFarlane fell ill on the second day of the inspection, and stunned pupils watched as she was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Ofsted has confirmed that the inspection was immediately paused. The school, which is part of the Leading Learners Trust, issued a statement to parents and pupils acknowledging the incident. The statement noted that while the situation was challenging, comments from parents and children had been uplifting. The trust also stated they were doing all they could to reassure the students who witnessed Ms. McFarlane leave in an ambulance.
Chapelhill Primary School was formerly known as Sandbrook Primary before closing in 2023 and reopening as an academy school. An Ofsted spokesperson expressed thoughts for Ms. McFarlane and the school community, wishing her a speedy recovery. The spokesperson reiterated that the inspection was paused upon hearing the news.
This incident occurs in the context of increased scrutiny on Ofsted inspections following the death of Ruth Perry, a 53-year-old headteacher, in January 2023. Mrs. Perry took her own life after her school, Caversham Primary in Reading, was downgraded to the lowest rating due to safeguarding concerns. An inquest into her death concluded that the Ofsted inspection contributed to her death, with her family warning that lessons must be learned from the experience.
