Sources close to the family described Gerber's death as "inevitable" due to his ongoing battle with addiction. "When he was getting huge modeling gigs, he didn't think it was because of him," a family friend stated, suggesting that a perceived lack of genuine personal achievement contributed to his struggles. His sister, Kaia Gerber, a successful model in her own right, reportedly tried to intervene, but felt powerless.
Gerber had been open about his challenges, launching an Instagram initiative in March 2023 to discuss his experiences and encourage others to feel less alone. In March, he revealed he had undergone an "Ibogaine Flood Dose" at a clinic in Cancun, Mexico, a treatment known for its use in addressing substance abuse.
His last public appearance was in May at an event supporting his sister. The family has not released an official cause of death.
