Presley Gerber, the 27-year-old son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, died on Sunday morning at a rehabilitation center in Santa Monica, California. Authorities are investigating his death as a possible overdose, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.
Gerber had been open about his struggles with addiction and mental health. He was found dead after a call reporting a possible overdose at 9:35 a.m. Police stated there was no immediate indication of foul play.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office confirmed his location and stated that the investigation is in its early stages. "A deputy medical examiner performed an examination today and the cause and manner of death have been deferred, which means additional testing and/or studies were requested in order to make a determination," the office said in a statement. The office noted that such determinations can take several months.
In March, Gerber shared a video on Instagram of himself undergoing what he described as an "ibogaine flood dose" in Mexico, commenting, "Praying it’s the last time I have to come back. Next time I’d like to choose." Ibogaine is a psychoactive compound derived from a plant, which researchers have studied for its potential use in treating depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
His mother, Cindy Crawford, responded to the post, writing, "You are a warrior! Walked thru the fire to find yourself! So proud!" His sister, Kaia Gerber, commented, "That’s my brother I am so damn proud." His father, Rande Gerber, added, "I’m so proud of you and your courage. Facing what’s hard takes real strength and watching you find your way back to yourself is everything."
The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
