A pregnant woman's cruise to the Bahamas was cut short Thursday when she was medically evacuated by the U.S. Coast Guard due to pregnancy complications. The 29-year-old woman was transported from the Carnival Sunrise about four miles northeast of Government Cut, the channel connecting PortMiami to the Atlantic Ocean, shortly after the ship departed.
The U.S. Coast Guard Southeast received a call from the ship's security manager requesting assistance. Sector Miami watchstanders coordinated the rescue, and the woman was safely brought ashore. She was transferred to emergency medical services personnel and taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center.
"Medical emergencies can happen anywhere. Coast Guard Southeast District crews remain always ready to respond and help get those in distress to the care they need," the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast stated in a Facebook post.
The Carnival Sunrise was on a scheduled four-night trip with planned stops in Princess Cays and Nassau, Bahamas. According to Cruise Hive, the incident did not impact the vessel's itinerary.
Carnival Cruise Line has policies in place regarding pregnant guests. The company's website states that women are not permitted to sail past their 24th week of pregnancy and must provide physician documentation before boarding.
