A murder investigation is underway after a pregnant woman was discovered in a van that had been set ablaze in Prestatyn, North Wales. Emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle fire around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, discovering the body of 35-year-old Samantha Natalie Phythian inside.

Post-mortem examinations revealed that Ms. Phythian, from Rhyl, was pregnant at the time of her death. Authorities believe she may have been alive when the fire started.

Thomas Bell, 38, also from Rhyl, was arrested on Monday and subsequently charged with murder. He appeared via videolink at Mold Crown Court on Friday and was remanded in custody. During the hearing, Judge Geraint Walters stated that evidence suggests the victim was alive when the fire began, and the defendant's case is that he did not start the fire.

The case has been adjourned to January for a plea and trial preparation hearing, with a potential trial date scheduled for three weeks in April of the following year.

Ms. Phythian's family described her as a "much-loved mum, daughter, sister, auntie and friend" in a tribute, stating that her "tragic and untimely death has left her family and friends devastated." They requested that people be mindful and respectful of rumors circulating on social media during this difficult time.

Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley urged the community to be cautious with comments that could cause further distress to the family or interfere with legal proceedings. Councillor Gerry Frobisher of Prestatyn Town Council called the incident isolated, noting that such events have not occurred in Prestatyn before and expressed his condolences to the deceased's family and friends.
