A pregnant 29-year-old woman was evacuated by the U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday from the Carnival Sunrise cruise ship due to pregnancy complications. The evacuation occurred approximately four miles northeast of Government Cut, a channel leading out of PortMiami, shortly after the vessel began its journey.
The U.S. Coast Guard Southeast received a request for assistance from the ship's security manager, according to a Facebook post from the agency. Watchstanders coordinated the rescue, and the woman was safely brought ashore and transferred to emergency medical services personnel. She was subsequently taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center for further care.
'Medical emergencies can happen anywhere. Coast Guard Southeast District crews remain always ready to respond and help get those in distress to the care they need,' the Coast Guard stated.
The Carnival Sunrise was on a scheduled four-night trip with planned stops in Princess Cays and Nassau, Bahamas. The incident did not impact the ship's itinerary, according to Cruise Hive.
Carnival Cruise Line has policies in place regarding pregnant passengers, prohibiting women from sailing past their 24th week of pregnancy. The cruise line also requires physician documentation for pregnant guests prior to boarding.
