Pre-Trained Puppies Fetch Premium Prices for Busy Dog Owners

Puddles on the floor, chewing the sofa, and barking at the wind are common frustrations for new puppy owners. However, a niche market is emerging where dog lovers can pay a premium of around £15,000 for a six-month-old puppy that is already house-trained and can perform basic commands.

This trend is driven by busy families and retirees who wish to avoid the demanding early stages of puppy care. Specialist dog trainers report increasing interest from clients prepared to pay up to ten times the standard cost of a pedigree puppy. Antonia Mitchell, founder of The Trained Dog Company in Surrey, observed a rise in demand post-Covid as many first-time owners struggled with training. Mitchell stated that dogs leaving her company exhibit skills such as loose lead walking, perfect recall, the ability to settle in public spaces, good manners, and neutrality towards people, dogs, and livestock.

Ashley Davis, head trainer at Trident Elite Family Protection Dogs in Leicestershire, noted that clients aim to bypass the chewing and toilet-training phases, wanting a well-socialized and balanced family pet from day one. "They wanted to skip the chewing and toilet-training stage in the house, and welcome home a well-socialized, balanced family pet from day one," Davis explained.

Dogs are made available for sale only after six months of age, a measure intended to prevent puppy farming. One owner, who opted to remain anonymous, shared that purchasing a pre-trained puppy named Leo upon retiring allowed them to enjoy companionship from the outset. "The time, expertise and care invested in Leo's early development have given us a confident, well-adjusted companion and allowed us to enjoy life with him from the very first day," the owner said.
