Prank Backfires as Viral Video Sparks Massive Fundraiser for Grocery Worker

A video of a viral prank that targeted a grocery store employee stocking shelves has resulted in a significant online fundraising effort for the worker.

The incident, captured on video and shared on Instagram, involved pranksters approaching a Red Baron pizza representative, identified publicly as Walt Z., while he was working. The pranksters asked for the time, and when Walt Z. took out his phone, one of them pretended to digitally steal money from him using a fake app animation and sound effect.

"I just took $10," the prankster is heard saying in the video, holding his phone near Walt Z.'s device and laughing.

Walt Z., a father of four, expressed his frustration and explained the difficulties of his job. "My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don't need this crap," he responded to the pranksters. "I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now! I was supposed to be off an hour ago! I gotta wake up at 5 in the morning and do 10 more stores!"

When the prankster insisted it was "just a joke," Walt Z. countered, "You're probably making money off of this! I can't even pay my goddamn mortgage! And I got four kids at home! So not funny!"

The pranksters uploaded the video to their Instagram channel, but it was later removed, and their account was deactivated following a strong online backlash. Social media users criticized the prank, with one X user commenting, "Real people have real emotions and they shouldn't have to become content just so someone can get views," describing the stunt as "the end of prank culture on the internet."

In response to the incident, a GoFundMe page was created to support Walt Z. The page had raised over $250,000 by Thursday afternoon. The creator of the fundraiser, Luke Oakenshield, stated, "This fundraiser is about standing up for a working person who is busting their butt and should not have to fear losing stability because someone wanted content and clicks."

An update on the fundraising page indicated that Walt Z. had been located and was aware of the campaign. He expressed gratitude for the support, and GoFundMe is managing the transfer of funds to him. The family has requested privacy.

Red Baron has not yet responded to requests for comment.
