Powerful Nor'easter Develops Off Southeast Coast, Threatens Mid-Atlantic

A potent nor'easter is forecast to batter the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts with significant coastal flooding, beach erosion, and strong winds through Thursday. The storm system, currently located off the North Carolina coast, has been designated Invest 93L by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), indicating a potential for it to develop subtropical or tropical characteristics.

The NHC will deploy additional forecasting tools to monitor the storm's development. Current projections suggest the system will remain offshore and begin to move away from the coast by the end of the week.

Regardless of any tropical development, the storm is expected to bring prolonged periods of high tide flooding, gusty winds exceeding 40 mph, and damaging surf to coastal areas, particularly the North Carolina Outer Banks and Delmarva Peninsula. Coastal flood alerts are already in effect for coastal North Carolina and Virginia.

In response to the anticipated worsening conditions, a mandatory evacuation has been ordered for Hatteras Island, North Carolina, due to the potential for significant ocean overwash. Parts of North Carolina Highway 12, a critical route through the Outer Banks, are already closed because of flooding, a recurring issue during coastal storms.

The most severe impacts are anticipated from the Outer Banks northward through Chesapeake Bay and into Ocean City, Maryland, where water levels could rise more than two feet above normal during high tide. The FOX Forecast Center predicts these adverse conditions will persist through late Wednesday evening and into Thursday.

Areas along the Outer Banks have experienced severe coastal erosion in recent years, with dozens of homes collapsing into the ocean since 2020, underscoring the vulnerability of the region to such storm events. The storm is bringing dangerous surf and rip currents to the affected coastlines.
