Powerball Jackpot Soars to $716 Million, Potential Payouts Significantly Lower After Taxes

The Powerball jackpot has grown to an estimated $716 million following 32 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner. The latest draw occurred on Monday, with the next opportunity for a ticket holder to claim the massive prize on Wednesday.

For a winner who chooses the lump sum payout, the estimated cash value of $307.2 million would be subject to significant tax reductions. An initial 24% federal tax withholding would reduce the payout to approximately $233.5 million. An additional 13% federal tax would further decrease the prize to an estimated $193.5 million. These figures do not account for potential state taxes, which vary by location.

Winners in states like Florida, California, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming would not owe state income tax on their winnings. However, New York imposes the highest state tax rate at 10.9%, with an additional 3.876% tax for winners within New York City.

Those opting for the annuity payment plan, which distributes the prize over 30 years, would also see their annual payments reduced. An initial annual payment of approximately $23.9 million could be reduced to around $15 million after taxes.

The winning numbers for Monday's draw were 18, 26, 49, 50, 54, with a Powerball of 1 and a Power Play multiplier of 3x. While no one won the jackpot, two tickets, one sold in Florida and another in Georgia, matched enough numbers to win $1 million.

The Powerball jackpot has not been won since a ticket worth $1.04 billion was sold in Quincy, Illinois, prior to the August 12 drawing. The winner of that prize, who chose to remain anonymous, received an estimated $450.5 million after opting for the lump sum payout in September.
