Potential Tropical Storm Isaias Forms Off US Gulf Coast, Triggering Flood Alerts
Millions in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia are under flood watches as a low-pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico shows a high likelihood of developing into a tropical storm this week.
A potential tropical storm has formed off the U.S. Gulf Coast, prompting flood alerts for millions across three states. Forecasters are monitoring a large, low-pressure area just south of Texas that shows a high probability of organizing into Tropical Storm Isaias this week.
The storm is expected to impact the Gulf states, including Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, and spread heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding into Georgia, the Carolinas, and farther north. Tropical moisture from the Gulf has already been contributing to storms across the U.S., leading the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue flood watches on Monday.
Over four million Americans in the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and Georgia have been alerted to expect several inches of rain through Monday evening, with the potential for dangerous flash floods. Northern Florida could see up to eight inches of rain between Monday and Wednesday, preceding the potential formation of Isaias.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates a 70 percent chance of a tropical cyclone forming this week, with AccuWeather anticipating this development between Wednesday and Friday. If Isaias forms, it would be the first tropical system to impact the U.S. mainland since Edouard made landfall along the Gulf Coast on September 1.
Urgent alerts have also been issued to mariners along the Florida coast near Tallahassee, warning of waterspouts forming in the Gulf during the severe storms expected throughout Monday. The NWS cautioned that waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create hazardous seas, advising vessels to seek safe harbor immediately.
