Troy Jackson, a contender to replace Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, was questioned about an independent voter's assertion that they would support Republican Sen. Susan Collins over him. The voter, Brent Hawkes, stated in a video interview that Jackson is not progressive and suggested he would be ineffective in federal government.
During an interview with MS NOW host Katy Tur, Jackson acknowledged the voter's assessment of his past votes, admitting he had voted against issues such as same-sex marriage and abortion more than 15 years ago. He explained that his views have evolved, stating, "it became clear to me after some time that abortion, reproductive rights access is a human right." Jackson highlighted a "100% voting record with Planned Parenthood" and noted his co-sponsorship of progressive abortion access legislation. He attributed his earlier votes to coming from "a rural area, a very Catholic area," and contrasted those with his subsequent voting record, which he claims aligns with progressive viewpoints.
Jackson had previously filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to potentially replace Platner, who withdrew from the Senate race on Wednesday following allegations of sexual abuse, which he denies. Jackson was an early supporter of Platner and had campaigned with him previously.
Tur also pressed Jackson on his continued support for Platner throughout his campaign, which had been marked by controversies including a Nazi tattoo, controversial Reddit posts, and the sexual abuse allegations. Jackson responded that he was unaware of the specifics regarding the Nazi tattoo and Reddit posts at the time and believed people can change, stating, "They were, you know, a different time period for him. And I understood, you know, that people can change."
