A heated exchange has erupted between Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy and Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, stemming from El-Sayed's criticism of the University of Michigan's football team.
El-Sayed, an alumnus of the university, questioned the Wolverines' integrity in a video, asking, "Is Michigan going to win a game without cheating? I say this as a Wolverine." This comment referred to an NCAA investigation into allegations that the team engaged in an elaborate sign-stealing scheme, which included illicitly filming opponents' sidelines for years. The scheme, reportedly conducted by former staffer Connor Stalions, led to the school being found in violation of the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy for compromising the integrity of competition and receiving an unfair competitive advantage. As a result, Michigan forfeited a share of its postseason revenue for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
Portnoy, a vocal supporter of the Wolverines, responded fiercely on X, calling El-Sayed a "terrorist." El-Sayed's Republican opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers, shared Portnoy's post, agreeing with the sentiment.
El-Sayed escalated the feud by mocking Portnoy's physique and athletic capabilities. He posted a video of Portnoy struggling to run on turf, with the caption, "Meanwhile, here's [Portnoy] committing an act of athletic terrorism. Less pizza, more gym, habibi."
This exchange occurs as El-Sayed faces scrutiny over his past statements regarding Iran's regime and Islamist organizations. During an interview with Fox News, El-Sayed was challenged on his remarks about understanding the motivations behind acts of terrorism. He clarified that the victim is never at fault and terrorism is wrong, regardless of the perpetrator or victim, but also pivoted to his opposition to a potential war in Iran.
Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump also targeted El-Sayed on social media, referring to him as "Mohammed" and a "Radical Extremist, Terrorist Sympathizer." El-Sayed, whose parents are Egyptian, called Trump's post an "attack on all of us" and a distraction from the impact of Trump's policies.
