Portland Officials Review Soccer Stadium Confrontation, Deny Policy Approval
City reviewing incident where women's sports supporters were forcibly removed from publicly owned stadium, stating operator and subcontractors are responsible for spectator decisions.
City officials in Portland, Oregon, are reviewing a filmed confrontation at a soccer match where supporters of women's sports were struck and removed from a publicly owned stadium. The city stated that it was not involved in decisions concerning the spectators or a reporter present at the event, attributing responsibility to the stadium operator, Peregrine, LLC, and its subcontractors.
Officials denied approving any specific policies related to clothing, messages about transgender participation in sports, banners, or press credentials. The stadium operating agreement requires the operator to implement a security plan and comply with all applicable laws. Ticket terms also mandate that spectators adhere to the rules and policies of the Portland Thorns, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), and Providence Park's guest guide.
The city confirmed it is working with the stadium operator to gather more details about the incident, which occurred during a match between the Portland Thorns and the North Carolina Courage. Footage from the event showed a group of approximately 20 spectators, who had displayed "Save Women’s Sports" banners and wore XX-XY Athletics shirts, being confronted by other attendees and subsequently escorted out by security.
The Justice Department has separately announced it is reviewing the Oct. 23 incident for potential constitutional concerns. A department spokesperson indicated that the conduct, based on initial information, appeared to raise questions of viewpoint discrimination and First Amendment issues rather than sex discrimination.
Providence Park is city-owned but operated by Peregrine Sports. Portland's Spectator Venues Program oversees the city's interests in the facility and its relationship with the operator. The city stated it will continue to engage with the stadium operator in accordance with their agreement.
