Pornhub Reinstates Australian Access for Apple Users Amid Age Verification Debate
The adult content platform returns to Australia after a seven-month ban, limiting access to users who verify their age through Apple's system.
Pornhub has resumed operations in Australia after a seven-month absence, but access is currently restricted to users with Apple devices. The website previously blocked Australian users in March, citing concerns that the country's new age verification laws posed risks to data privacy.
Aylo, Pornhub's parent company, announced Wednesday that it is re-enabling access for 'eligible adult users' in Australia who have successfully verified their age via Apple's built-in Australian age verification process. This move follows the implementation of Australia's age verification laws on March 9, which mandate that online users prove they are over 18 to access adult content and other age-restricted material.
The Australian regulations require websites to employ safety measures such as facial age estimation, photo identification, or digital wallets. The country's eSafety Commissioner has stated that platforms violating these laws will face fines, emphasizing the objective of protecting children from harmful content.
Aylo stated that its decision to return to the Australian market was influenced by Apple's implementation of child safety features as a default setting on its devices, unless the owner has confirmed their adult status. Alex Kekesi, Aylo's vice president of brand and community, noted that the company has long advocated for device-based age verification as the most effective and privacy-conscious method for preventing minors from accessing inappropriate online content.
