Popular Cornwall Christmas Market Canceled After Decade, Angering Visitors and Vendors
Organizers cite rising costs and operational challenges for the closure of the Fowey Christmas Market, with some attendees facing non-refundable bookings.
Fowey Christmas Market, a decade-old event in Cornwall known for its festive atmosphere, local crafts, and food, has been canceled, organizers announced. The market, which was scheduled to take place from December 4 to 6, has been called off due to "extremely challenging" conditions over the past five years, including increased costs, operational difficulties, and unspecified "other factors outside of our control."
The cancellation will impact both visitors and local traders. Some visitors had booked non-refundable accommodation specifically for the market, leading to disappointment and financial loss. Stallholders are being offered refunds, but with a £50 administration fee, a decision some have criticized as unfair despite organizers stating it is less than the terms and conditions allowed.
Organizers cited "a handful of individuals who do not represent the views of our visitors or wider town have their own agenda, which negatively impacts the event, local businesses and traders." They specifically mentioned the rescheduling of the town's light switch-on and parade to a different date from the traditional market opening night. This, they stated, directly affects the market's viability and has caused significant stress, additional work, and negative impacts on the event's program, finances, and operations.
Residents expressed dismay at the market's closure. One local wrote on Facebook that the market was a favorite for purchasing Christmas items and hoped the issues could be resolved for future years. Another visitor expressed frustration over non-refundable accommodation bookings and a lack of earlier notification.
Fowey Christmas Market had been a significant draw for the region, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually over its ten-year run. The organizers stated they are trying to minimize the impact on stallholders by offering options to transfer funds to other events organized by Live Events South West.
