Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Blood Tests, X-Ray Following Lung Surgery

Pope Leo XIV underwent blood tests and a chest X-ray on Wednesday, following surgery to remove a small nodule on his right lung. The Vatican announced that his recovery is progressing normally and as expected.

The 71-year-old pontiff had thoracic surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. Doctors confirmed after the procedure that he had lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer. The Holy See Press Office stated that the night passed calmly for the Pope at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

According to a statement attributed to Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora, the blood tests and X-ray performed post-surgery showed values within the expected range. The Pope has also begun respiratory physiotherapy, has started walking in his room, and has resumed eating normally.

"His recovery is proceeding as expected," the statement added.

The diagnosis was confirmed through a tissue examination during the operation, consistent with preoperative test findings. The surgery itself lasted about 90 minutes, and doctors reported no complications.

Earlier in the week, Pope Leo XIV had informed the public about the planned procedure. "Doctors found a small lump in the lung," he said after an Angelus address. "It was identified at a very early stage and well situated." He added that doctors deemed it appropriate to intervene, and he decided to have the surgery to remove it.

He thanked the public for their spiritual closeness and asked for their prayers.
