Pope Leo XIV Rallies 800,000 in Paris, Emphasizes Faith for Youth

Pope Leo XIV drew an estimated 800,000 faithful to a historic outdoor Mass in Paris on Saturday, delivering a message that faith alone can fulfill deep human needs and directly addressing the young people in attendance.

"Only God can fill the emptiness within us," the pontiff declared during his homily, delivered in French from the Place de la Concorde. He also emphasized the role of young Catholics, stating, "You are today’s church."

The Mass marked a significant moment, drawing a crowd more than triple the size of the 250,000 who attended a Mass led by Pope Benedict XVI in Paris in 2008. The Archdiocese of Paris announced that the unexpectedly large turnout necessitated the opening of two overflow sites to accommodate attendees.

Pope Leo, identified as Robert Francis Prevost, is on the second day of a four-day apostolic journey in France, the first official papal visit to the country in 18 years. His engagement with the massive crowd, which filled the Place de la Concorde and stretched along the Champs-Élysées, has been noted for its appeal to younger generations. One Paris resident attributed the large turnout to the Pope's demeanor, describing him as "calm, a good-listener and he has very precise ideas and is able to express them clearly and in an engaging way."

During his address, Pope Leo referenced France's extensive Catholic history and its saints, urging the congregation to find spiritual fulfillment. "Drink from the source that is the pierced heart of Jesus, who alone can quench our thirst for God, life, truth, unity, peace, communion, and happiness," he stated.

The Pope's current trip to France underscores his stated mission of proclaiming peace. As he mentioned on the papal plane en route to the country, "I, above all, am travelling to France, as to anywhere else in the world, as a follower of Jesus Christ wanting to proclaim peace, the peace of Christ throughout the world."
