Pope Francis Sends Letter of Support to White Sox Ahead of MLB Playoffs

Pope Francis, known for his allegiance to the Chicago White Sox, has offered his support to the team as they begin their American League wild-card series. The Vatican shared a letter from the Pope to White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, expressing well wishes for the team's playoff performance.

In his letter, dated September 5, Pope Francis, who was elected pontiff in May 2025 and was formerly known as Father Bob, stated, “As I have noted, sport can truly become a school of life, where all can learn that abundance does not come from victory at any cost, but from sharing, from respecting others and from the joy of walking together.”

The Pope, who hails from Chicago, has previously made his support for the White Sox known. He attended the team's World Series opener in 2005 against the Houston Astros, sitting in section 140, Row 19, Seat 2 as the White Sox secured a 5-3 victory.

The letter was sent in response to a promotional event on August 11, where fans received Pope hats featuring the team's logo. Chicago native Father Tom McCarthy delivered one of these hats to Pope Francis in August.

"In this spirit, it is my hope that the White Sox will continue to foster bonds of friendship and solidarity among people, and thus bear hopeful witness to the possibility of living and working together in peace,” the Pope's letter continued. “With these sentiments, I willingly invoke the Almighty’s abundant blessings upon you and your loved ones.”

This marks the White Sox's first postseason appearance since 2021, following three consecutive seasons with 100 losses. The team secured a 6-3 victory against the Houston Astros in Game 1 of their American League wild-card series on Tuesday at Daikin Park. Braden Montgomery hit a solo home run, and Sam Antonacci drove in two runs in the win. Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in Houston.
