Pope Francis Calls Putin from Hospital, Urges Ceasefire in Oleshky

Pope Leo XIV contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin from his hospital recovery room to urge a ceasefire in the city of Oleshky, located in Ukraine's Kherson region. The call, made while the pontiff recovers from lung surgery, focused on the severe humanitarian crisis in the city.

The Vatican stated that the Pope expressed "deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky" and called for "a ceasefire to allow the delivery of food and medical assistance and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population." The Holy See also reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue and peace.

Oleshky has been under Russian control since May, and reports indicate no humanitarian food deliveries have been permitted. The city is without electricity, gas, or running water, and its hospital is described as barely functional. The Kremlin, however, attributes the situation to Ukraine and provided Putin with a "detailed explanation regarding the Kyiv regime’s responsibility for the difficult humanitarian situation there." Despite this, the Kremlin added that Putin supports "the Vatican’s intention to help create conditions for ensuring the safety of the local population and facilitating the delivery of essential supplies."

The 71-year-old Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove a portion of his right lung. Medical updates indicate his recovery is progressing well, with doctors stating he can carry out his daily activities independently. He is expected to lead the traditional Angelus prayer service on Sunday, potentially from the hospital or the Vatican, and his previously scheduled international travel beginning November 6 remains on track.
