Pope Francis Affirms Media's Role Amidst White House Press Ban Concerns

Pope Leo XIV underscored the essential role of journalists in covering public figures, welcoming reporters aboard his plane as he addressed concerns about the Trump administration's attempt to bar U.S. media from the White House.

Speaking to reporters while en route to France for a four-day visit, Leo stated, “I am very happy that here, you are all welcome.” This affirmation came in response to a question regarding the Trump administration's efforts to prevent CNN and other news organizations from accessing White House press briefings.

Earlier on Thursday, a judge had granted CNN, MS NOW, and Politico a temporary reprieve, allowing them to resume coverage.

During his international travels, Pope Leo XIV also issued an apology for a previous instance where he missed an opportunity for an airborne press conference with reporters. This occurred when his charter plane experienced mechanical issues in the Canary Islands, leading to his return to Rome on a private jet.

"A special mention I would like to make for those of you who were travelling with me when we returned to Rome from Spain,” Leo told the traveling press corps. “I want to apologize personally for an incident, that I had nothing to do with, but which I know left a number of you unhappy with the fact that we couldn’t have the flight back together back to Rome.”

The Pope clarified that the decision to accept the Spanish king's offer of a private jet for his return to Rome was not his own. Over 70 journalists and members of the Vatican delegation had waited for several hours at the airport in Tenerife for a replacement aircraft.
