A recent poll indicates that only one in seven individuals residing in rural areas believe the Labour party is concerned with their interests, with a significant 43 percent feeling the government has "waged war on the countryside." The survey, conducted by ORB International for the Countryside Alliance, revealed that a mere 15 percent of rural inhabitants agree the party cares about the people who live and work in these areas.
These findings emerge as the Countryside Alliance prepares to launch its new Campaign for the Countryside in Westminster. The organization advocates for a reset in the government's relationship with rural communities, citing policies such as a proposed ban on trail hunting and past actions related to family farm and inheritance taxes as damaging.
Tim Bonner, chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, stated that the poll highlights the critical need for the government to rectify past policy missteps and presents an opportunity for a rural reset. He cautioned against focusing on issues that do not resonate with the public and urged for the revision or abandonment of detrimental policies.
Lord Blunkett, a Labour figure, is also calling for the current administration to reconsider its stance on rural issues. He noted that opinion polls consistently show greater dissatisfaction among countryside residents regarding government policies and the services they receive. Blunkett emphasized the necessity of a reset, including setting aside the proposed ban on trail hunting, which involves hounds following an artificial scent rather than a live fox.
He suggested that while past mistakes concerning family farms and inheritance tax cannot be undone, lessons can be learned. Blunkett contrasted policy decisions made by officials with urban or London-based perspectives against the real-world consequences for those who contribute to food security and provide leisure opportunities.
The survey also indicated that 28 percent of rural residents would be more inclined to vote for Labour if the party improved its relationship with them. Lord Blunkett is scheduled to speak at the upcoming Campaign for the Countryside launch, alongside former Prime Minister Lord Cameron.
