A significant portion of Democratic voters support the federal investigation into California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, according to a recent poll. The Daily Mail/JL Partners survey found that 27% of Democrats believe the probe into the couple is warranted, with 14% expressing "somewhat support" and 13% "strongly support."

The investigation, which reportedly involves the FBI and IRS and has been underway since at least 2025, is said to be focusing on Siebel Newsom’s finances and the couple's tax records. Federal agents have reportedly contacted numerous individuals connected to the couple.

This level of support among Democrats contrasts with the initial reaction following the investigation's public disclosure last month, when many prominent Democrats, including Sen. Adam Schiff and former Vice President Kamala Harris, publicly backed Newsom. The governor has claimed that President Donald Trump is orchestrating a politically motivated attack against him and his wife to derail a potential White House campaign.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has rejected Newsom's assertions, stating that the governor's claims are not "grounded in fact." Blanche remarked on June 15 that Newsom's statements do not make his claims true, regardless of their potential benefit to his political standing.

Newsom has characterized the inquiry as a "fishing expedition" initiated by Trump's Department of Justice, asserting that he and his wife have "nothing to hide." He has also suggested the investigation targets him because he is considering a presidential run, stating, "To get me, he’s coming after my wife."

The poll also surveyed independent voters, with 43% supporting the investigation and 36% opposing it. Unsurprisingly, support was highest among Republicans, with over 70% backing the probe.

Newsom, who is serving the final months of his second gubernatorial term, is widely expected to seek the Democratic nomination for the 2028 presidential election. In a separate finding from the same poll, Newsom placed second among Democratic registered voters considering a 2028 presidential bid, garnering 15% support. Kamala Harris led with a larger share, followed by Pete Buttigieg with 11%.
