New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is highly popular within the five boroughs but faces significant political opposition in the city's surrounding suburbs, according to a new Siena College poll. The survey of 811 likely statewide voters found that 69% of New York City residents hold a favorable view of Mamdani, while only 24% have an unfavorable view. In contrast, 60% of suburban voters registered an unfavorable opinion of the mayor, with just 34% holding a favorable view. Upstate voters showed a more divided opinion, with 41% favorable and 46% unfavorable. These suburban sentiments are being leveraged by state Republicans, who are seeking to tie Gov. Kathy Hochul and other Democratic candidates to Mamdani, particularly in competitive suburban districts. This strategy aims to capitalize on the perceived unease with Mamdani among suburban voters. Statewide, the poll indicates that 47% of respondents had a favorable view of Mamdani, and 44% had an unfavorable view. Republicans see Mamdani as a liability outside of New York City. "Suburbanites fear Mamdani," stated John McLaughlin, a pollster for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman. "Hochul endorsed Mamdani for mayor. She created him. Whatever Mamdani does reflects on her." Nassau County Republicans reportedly used Mamdani in campaign materials last year to attack Democratic opponents during their successful sweep of countywide races. Strategists believe Mamdani's popularity within New York City could also serve to energize the vote for Hochul and other Democrats in the city. "Will Mamdani help Hochul in New York City this year? Absolutely. His support can’t hurt," said Manhattan Democratic Party leader Keith Wright. Demographic breakdowns from the Siena poll reveal strong support for Mamdani among Black voters, with nearly 80% viewing him favorably, and among young voters aged 18 to 34, at 72%. However, Jewish voters showed the highest negative sentiment, with 66% viewing him unfavorably. Older voters, aged 55 and over, also leaned unfavorable, with 51% disapproving compared to 38% favorable. Mamdani's personal popularity outstrips that of his political affiliation. Only 30% of voters viewed the Democratic Socialists of America favorably, while 47% held unfavorable opinions, and nearly a quarter had no opinion. Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg commented on Mamdani's potential impact, stating, "No question Mamdani can be helpful to Hochul with the vote in New York City." However, Greenberg also noted the "double-edged sword" nature of these political ties, raising questions about how Hochul will navigate her relationship with Mamdani and how Blakeman will manage his association with former President Donald Trump, who faces a 60% unfavorable rating statewide. Trump is scheduled to campaign with Blakeman on Long Island. Meanwhile, Gov. Hochul's statewide favorability stands at 40% favorable and 57% unfavorable, though she garners a 59% favorable rating within New York City.
