Catherine Walker, 47, who worked for Nottinghamshire Police, has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, or abandoning a child, causing unnecessary suffering.
Walker was the legal guardian of a nine-year-old boy who was discovered unresponsive in his bedroom on December 16, 2024. Despite resuscitation efforts, the boy died in hospital. An investigation by Nottinghamshire Police revealed evidence of "clear mistreatment of the boy over a prolonged period of time."
Authorities noted that the boy's bedroom conditions were starkly different from the rest of the house, lacking basic comforts. The room had no blinds or curtains, a dangerously loose electrical socket, minimal furniture, and a lock fitted to the outside of the door. Walker claimed the room was under renovation, a statement police investigation found to be untrue.
Det Ch Insp Gail Routledge described the case as one of the most upsetting she had encountered, stating, "This boy was very clearly mistreated for a significant period of time and was living in conditions that no child should have to endure." She added, "It was always our case that this mistreatment was a deliberate choice by the defendant, rather than the result of neglectful parenting." The force confirmed that Walker's former husband, who was the boy's primary carer, died shortly after the boy's death.
Walker was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday.
