Police Use Undercover Tactics to Apprehend Machete Suspect

A man wanted for stabbing and assault offenses was apprehended by police who employed unconventional undercover tactics, posing as a food delivery driver and a street cleaner. Roy Hallissey, who had been evading authorities, was arrested in Poplar, East London, after officers closed in on him from separate directions.

Authorities were aware that Hallissey frequented a market in Poplar, often arriving on an electric bike. However, his pattern of avoiding areas when police were present prompted the innovative arrest strategy. The operation successfully caught Hallissey off guard, preventing his escape.

Upon his arrest, officers discovered a large machete concealed on his person. Hallissey was already wanted for failing to appear in court for sentencing related to a previous stabbing conviction. He was also being sought in connection with an alleged assault on an emergency worker.

Additionally, the arrest revealed a breach of a criminal behavior order that had prohibited him from being in the Poplar area. Inspector Frank Hartley stated that Hallissey was found with a dangerous weapon and in violation of an order meant to protect the community. He emphasized the Metropolitan Police's ongoing efforts to locate and apprehend wanted offenders who pose a risk of further criminal activity.

Hallissey appeared before Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, May 29, where he admitted to several charges, including possession of a bladed article, breaching his criminal behavior order, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, assaulting police, and escaping lawful custody. He is scheduled for sentencing on Wednesday, October 7.
