Police have suspended the search for a three-month-old infant, Louis, after his mother, Helena Wright, 36, and her 23-month-old daughter, Hazel, were found deceased in waters near Cape Northumberland in South Australia. The search for the infant was called off on Wednesday afternoon, three days after the initial discovery.
Authorities confirmed that Wright had visited a police station the day before the incident, where she spoke with officers. Police were also alerted to a welfare check at her home on Monday morning following a call from a friend, but the residence was found empty. Less than two hours later, an abandoned car with its engine still running was reported near the coast.
Recovery and Investigation
The bodies of Wright and her toddler daughter were recovered from the ocean on Monday. The treacherous, cold, and shark-infested waters surrounding Cape Northumberland made recovery efforts difficult, with prevailing weather conditions further hindering operations. Despite the suspension of the search for Louis, authorities stated they would continue to monitor the shoreline in hopes of retrieving the baby's body.
South Australia Police have confirmed they are treating the incident as a suspected murder-suicide. Major Crime detectives and forensic officers remain at the scene as investigations continue. A coronial investigation is underway, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Police have stated there is no information to suggest anyone else was involved.
South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas described the tragedy as one that had deeply shocked the community, particularly given the involvement of young children.
