Lancashire Police have launched an urgent investigation into the discovery of a foetus's remains found in a bag near the River Hodder.
The remains were found by officers on Tuesday after a member of the public reported finding what they believed to be a placenta. A subsequent search of a bag located under Hodder Bridger and Cromwell Bridge on Walley Road revealed the foetus.
Authorities have stated that the foetus is not believed to be at full term, and efforts are underway to determine its exact age. Police are prioritizing the identification of the mother due to concerns for her health and welfare.
"We have a live investigation underway following the devastatingly sad discovery of this little one," said DCI Jill Vescovi of Lancashire Police's Force Major Investigation Team. "Our enquiries are in their very early stages, and we are working to determine the important facts."
Vescovi emphasized the importance of finding the mother to understand what happened and to ensure she receives any necessary medical treatment. "I know that she must have been through something horrific, and she may be frightened about coming forward," Vescovi added, making a direct appeal for her to contact the police or a trusted individual.
The area around the discovery site remains cordoned off as investigations continue. Police are also appealing for witnesses, particularly a man who was in the vicinity with two children between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the day the remains were found, believing he may have witnessed something relevant.
Anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, is urged to contact Lancashire Police.
