Brazilian federal police searched the home of former President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday for weapons and ammunition, but nothing was found, according to Bolsonaro's lawyer. The search was ordered by the Brazilian Supreme Court.
Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup following his 2022 electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He is under house arrest in the capital, Brasilia. His lawyer, João Henrique Nascimento de Freitas, stated after witnessing the search that "nothing was found."
A federal police official confirmed that no items were seized. The Supreme Court's Justice Alexandre de Moraes signed a decision Tuesday ordering the search after a discrepancy emerged between the number of firearms legally registered in Bolsonaro's name and the number handed over to authorities.
Last month, police seized a firearm owned by Bolsonaro that was in the possession of a military officer at a checkpoint. De Moraes granted Bolsonaro authorization to remain under house arrest despite the incident.
A panel of Supreme Court justices convicted Bolsonaro in September, and he began serving his sentence in November. In March, the former president was granted house arrest due to ill health.
Bolsonaro's trial drew international attention, with former U.S. President Donald Trump imposing tariffs on Brazilian goods, citing a "witch hunt" against his ally. Many of these tariffs were later lifted, although the Trump administration had threatened further tariffs over alleged unfair commercial practices, despite a significant U.S. trade surplus with Brazil.
