Police Respond to "Hot Fuzz" Swan Incident on Busy Road
Officers rerouted traffic and safely guided a wayward swan back to its lake.
Police officers in Weymouth, Dorset, responded to a call involving a swan that had wandered onto a busy road, causing traffic delays. The incident occurred on Thursday evening on Swannery Bridge, an aptly named location near Radipole Lake.
Authorities arrived at approximately 7:30 p.m. and blocked the road as the swan made its way toward the carriageway. Officers approached the bird cautiously, attempting to guide it back into the adjacent Radipole Lake. After a brief standoff lasting about five minutes, the swan returned to the water, and traffic flow was restored.
The situation drew comparisons to a scene from the 2007 comedy film "Hot Fuzz," in which police characters played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are tasked with capturing a troublesome swan. The film humorously depicts the officers' struggles with the elusive bird.
This is not the first time police have dealt with avian traffic disruptions. In 2023, officers rescued a swan from the M1 motorway, another incident that evoked "Hot Fuzz" comparisons. In that instance, the swan was given a ride in a police car and subsequently returned to Attenborough Nature Reserve. Nottinghamshire Police shared the event on X, noting the swan was headed to "much sunnier climes than a custody suite."
Earlier in 2023, authorities in Bath escorted a young swan from the city center back to the river. Onlookers captured the unusual scene as an officer used a fluorescent jacket to guide the cygnet through the streets, much to the amusement of shoppers.
