South Yorkshire Police have commenced excavations in a field in Rotherham as part of a renewed effort to locate the remains of Teresa Shephard, who was murdered in 1995. The 26-year-old vanished from Sheffield in June of that year, and her body has never been found.

Her ex-boyfriend, Peter Turner, then 54, was convicted of her murder in 1996 and sentenced to life in prison. The fresh search is focused on a field off Piper Lane in Aston, Rotherham, an area situated between Shephard's former home in Basegreen, Sheffield, and Worksop, Nottinghamshire, where Turner resided at the time of the murder.

A significant police cordon has been established at the site, with officers expected to remain for several days. The investigation into Shephard's disappearance in 1995 led detectives to arrest and charge Turner. Evidence presented at his trial at Sheffield Crown Court included the discovery of blood spots belonging to Shephard inside his car. Turner denied the murder charge, claiming he had not seen Shephard on the night she disappeared, but was ultimately found guilty.
