Police Raid Home of NY Times Exec's Wife Days After Parents Arrested for His Murder

Police officers were observed entering the home of Candice Jang, the wife of the late New York Times tech executive Jonathan McKinsey, on Tuesday evening. This action follows the arrest of her parents, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, who are accused of gunning down McKinsey.

Video footage from Tuesday shows multiple officers arriving at a gated community and repeatedly knocking on a door until it was opened. The officers then entered the residence one by one.

McKinsey, 40, was allegedly shot and killed on Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Dublin Sports Grounds in Northern California. Witnesses reported that Zhang and Chen, both 77, allegedly took turns shooting McKinsey. The New York Times confirmed McKinsey's identity and stated he had been employed by the newspaper since 2023, serving as the head of engineering for games player experience.

Court documents indicate that McKinsey and his estranged wife, Candice Jang, were involved in a contentious custody dispute over their children leading up to his death. Records show McKinsey was charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse by Alameda prosecutors in 2025. A restraining order filed by McKinsey against Jang mentioned that Chen had visited the couple in 2023 to observe their children.

According to court documents, a grandmother accused McKinsey of influencing her grandson to wear his sister's dresses. McKinsey's cousin, Lovell Garner, expressed shock over the incident, stating that the family is still processing the event. Garner added that it seemed "obvious that they were done with him since they killed him."

Zhang and Chen remain in jail as the investigation into McKinsey's killing continues.
