Police Officer Investigated for Misconduct Died After Being Hit by Train
Dorset Police confirmed PC Alex Ayre, 24, was suspended and under investigation for gross misconduct prior to his death, which is not being treated as suspicious.
A 24-year-old police officer who died after being struck by a train was under investigation for gross misconduct, Dorset Police confirmed.
PC Alex Ayre, who joined the force in June 2022, was being investigated for misconduct related to his off-duty behavior and had been suspended prior to his death, which occurred last Friday morning near Branksome, Dorset. British Transport Police are leading the investigation into his death and have stated it is not being treated as suspicious. An inquest will be opened by HM Coroner.
Dorset Police Chief Constable Rachel Farrell stated that the misconduct investigation was in its early stages and that suspension does not presume wrongdoing. As is mandatory, the force has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for a review of its handling of the matter.
PC Ayre worked in response, covering the Boscombe and Bournemouth area. His family described him as a deeply loved and respected son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, who had a personality that drew people to him. They remembered him for his ability to make people feel welcome, his helpful nature, and his sense of humor.
"We would give anything to have more time with you, Alex. There were so many more memories still meant to be made," his mother Leah and sister Chloe said in a statement. "Twenty-four years will never feel like enough, but you filled those years with so much love, laughter and friendship."
British Transport Police were called to the scene around 9:20 a.m. on Friday. Paramedics responded, but PC Ayre was pronounced dead at the scene. Following initial inquiries, the incident was not deemed suspicious, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
